| My name is Maria Cesilia Lauer. I am 17 years old and am the fifth of seven kids. Philadelphia, Pa is my birth city but Fall River, Ma is my home. I am finishing off my junior year at Durfee and I couldn’t be any happier. At school I am heavily involved in music and art. Although this year is the first time I ever took Durfee art classes, I have been drawing since I was nine, and have recently picked up graphic design. I started out by drawing from Poke-Mon cards, Yu-Gi-Oh cards, and comic magazines, but now I draw more realistic type things like portraits and animals. Although my artistic talent is raw I do learn a lot from my art teachers, my visual design teacher, and most of all, my oldest brother, Jose. He is one of the best artists I know and he is my biggest inspiration. I have accomplished a lot through my creations, but yet I am still searching for my signature style. I use a lot of references when I draw, and I usually always draw in pencil. I do hope to improve with colored drawings and paintings, but for now I wish to perfect sketching. For the past couple of years, I have been exposed to the world of visual design. Designing graphics has been really fun for me, but it distracted me from my sketch pad and pencil. This year I’ve just learned to balance the two arts and use them to my full advantage. I have designed the CD cover for a Myspace band and designed Durfee’s 2008-2009 agenda books, the Durfee musicians’ T-shirts, the logo on the band’s warm-up suits, and tattoo designs for multiple people. Also, I have drawn the cover for “The Phoenix Nest” in school, and have won the “What a Peaceful Fall River Would Look Like” art contest. It’s beyond rewarding for me when people appreciate my art. That’s what keeps me motivated to keep going. People often get surprised when I tell them I’m completely blind out of one eye; the way I see it, if I have an eye for art there’s no need for a second! Art is a natural gift that I will expand upon and treasure for a lifetime. |

If you are still having problems with Photoshop have you ever tried using GIMP since it is open source, it is a good alternative to Photoshop.

I hope you like GIMP it uses a lot of PSP style brushes etc.
I'm only just getting into using a pc for graphics and find it very easy to use.
